I was amazed because the last time i was in her room, there was barely any standing space.Make up was all over the cabinets, in the wardrobe, in her bags , it was literally everywhere. Her mum got her a set of 30 makeup brushes and a generous quantity of make up over christmas . So i said "sweetheart the last time i was in your room there was enough make up to start a small business". She said as a matter of fact "Aunty i have nothing, you should see my friends make up sets".
I was about to explain to her that there's no way she has "nothing" then i remembered the number of times i had said i didn't have anything to wear to an occasion while I had wardrobes full of clothes.
It was during one such time that i decided i had had enough of the "nothing to wear syndrome". I was so frustrated with my wardrobe i decided to declutter. It wasn't easy, it was emotional. You don't realise how many pieces in your wardrobe you hold on to because of certain memories and you just can't let go of them. For example I had this outfit that i had worn to my graduation in 2004. I loved it and even though i hadn't worn it for over 10 years i just couldn't bring myself to give it to charity. It was in a good state. All dry cleaned and in a suit bag but not in use.
I also had this stunning evening gown i had worn to a friends wedding as a bridesmaid. It's a beautiful dress but i haven't worn in for about 12 years so really it should go to charity. I had so many such dresses it was unbelievable.
Then i had what i like to call unrealistic pieces. You know those dresses that am trying to slim back into...am sure you have some too.
So i took one weekend off and brought out all my clothes. I employed the services of my other half to make sure that i didn't fall off the wagon :-) .
And this is what we did:
Anything i hadn't worn in the last one year had to go. That was painful but the reality is, if i had gone from Winter to Summer and didn't need it then i probably don't need it at all.
Anything that didn't fit me anymore had to go. I had two categories. I had put on some weight then lost it. But when i was two sizes bigger, i had bought some lovely stuff which i intended to have altered to smaller sizes. Truth is, i just didn't have the free time to do it myself and it would have cost too much to get it professionally done so those had to go.
Then there was the pieces i had promised myself for like 5 years that i would slim into..yeah right.
What about the stuff i had bought while on holiday which at that point looked amazing but now look ridiculous! It's all part of being a girl. Those too had to go.
And finally there was those wardrobe essential pieces that have seen better days. Faded jeans, i mean super faded jeans but they fit like a glove :-) yeah recycle bin.
By the time i was done with this process, i had a quarter of my wardrobe left and i have planned another weekend to coordinate the pieces and make sure they are all essential
Please leave a comment and let me know whether you have recently declutter and how that went or are you planning ?
