Guide to Buying Your Prom Dress 2015 | UK Prom Dresses

Hi prom queens,

It’s me again with your weekly guide on buying a prom dress. Last week we talked about the budget and the importance of making sure that you have a list of all items you will need for the all important night.

Today we’ll talk about the length of the dress with emphasis on the short prom dress. Am sure you have a dream dress in mind that is inspired by someone you admire. This could be a magazine ad that caught your eye, a movie character or even a celebrity, which is great!

I hope you managed to scan through Vogues best-dressed list of the recent Golden Globes Awards. If you didn’t , don’t worry I’ve got you covered. Grab a cup of coffee and click on the link HERE. Another event to watch out for is the Oscars night in February where all the celebrities pull all the stops. You don’t have to wait till February, you can scan through 2014 Oscars best dressed list here.

When it comes to length of prom dress, there are 4 options that are really popular:
1.     Classic ballgown which is full length,
2.     Tea length prom dresses,
3.     Short prom dresses and
4.     Assymetric hem including high-low and waterfall prom dresses.

The short prom dress is the dress with a hemline above the knee.  We will call this dress short and sweet. This is for the girl looking for something sassy, fashionable and edgy.

If you decide to go for the short and sweet dress, i would suggest giving it a modern twist; think High School Musical and draw inspiration.

To achieve the princess look in a short and sweet dress i would suggest a dress with a fitted bodice, sweetheart neckline and a full tulle skirt.  Add some crystals and jewels embellishment on the bodice of your dress for the sparkle effect. This creates emphasis on your waist and gives a real fairytale look.  Corset lace-up dresses are also becoming very popular in the U.K.

For a flirty look I suggest an off-shoulder short and sweet dress in a feminine soft chiffon fabric. Add some diamante and sequin belt embellishment on the waistline or a corsage flower on the shoulder.

For a mature and sophisticated look, you can opt for the A-line style of dress.  These dresses give the “confident” look and can be quite tricky to pull off.  You will need to make sure that the make up and hair is well coordinated to avoid a staggered look.
